In de geest van 'conceptual textbased art' is het de bedoeling een commentaar te leveren op de kunstwereld, de situatie van de kunstenaar en de perceptie door de toeschouwer.

Nicolas VANDER BIEST woont en werkt al enkele jaren in Mexico Stad, maar duikt straks van 10 oktober tot 14 november 2021 op in het KUNSTENHUIS HARELBEKE voor de groepstentoonstelling 'FUCK YOU', van curator-kunstenaar Klaus VERSCHEURE, samen met o.a. Jacques CHARLIER, Kendell GEERS, Stanislas LAHAUT, Karl MECHNIG, Erwin OLAF, Polly POLLET, DD Trans, Leo COPERS,...

"FUCK YOU is de naam van een groepsshow (10/10 tot 14/11) in het Kunstenhuis in Harelbeke, een stad in West-Vlaanderen naast Kortrijk. De naam van de tentoonstelling moet 

niet alleen provocerend werken, wat hij ook wel mag/moét doen, maar moét meteen sprekend zijn voor de inhoud van de show. En neen, deze tentoonstelling wordt geen staalboek uit de wereld van de pornografie, maar wel een staalboek van het gevoel dat in het hoofd van veel kunstenaars leeft: ‘Fuck you.”

"The text for this piece is based on a partly faded publicity mural I saw once in Belgium, years ago. I always have loved that phrase but never knew what to do with it till now. The phrase was obviously in Flemish and sounded a bit old fashioned. I decided to use the graphics and materials of the flags used by the marching bands which every village used to have back in the days.. ‘cause yes , in the end everything fades away…. I made the English version for a show here in Mexico, and a Flemish version (below) for my upcoming groupshow in Belgium in October. "

Perform, Position, Play was conceived as the script for a dialogue between two actors. It holds what seems short paradigms from the world of art or the artist’s universe. Existing of three words each, following the thesis – anti thesis – synthesis model, they can be performed as civil, rational conversation. Equally composed as a sound piece, they can be performed as poetry, or rap. As a reader, they can be projected as a film or shown as a video or be published in a book. As works of art they can be printed and framed. Mixing iconic words from art history with tongue-in-cheek references , observations on daily life, and artists’ slang, the paradigms form a semantic maze with no other purpose than perform, position and play -ay -ay. 

Demoen and Derycke have had long and hybrid careers in the worlds of art and media. Their triangular serve-and-volley has both depth and freshness, melancholy and playfulness: a book of stories, each condensed in 3 words.

Vandaag nemen we u mee naar 
Mexico City 
voor een bezoek aan het atelier van 
Nicolas VANDER BIEST 

Met enkele flitsen brengen we u in de sfeer, maar we laten u vooral een aantal recente werken zien, waaronder zelfs een paar in absolute primeur.

Een paar dagen geleden nam hij ons nog mee naar het dak van zijn flatgebouw voor de interventie

In zijn werk stelt Nicolas VANDER BIEST vragen over de kunst en het leven, over zichzelf en de maatschappij, over het 'kunstestablishment' en de 'artistieke realiteit'.

Op sommige vragen geeft hij een antwoord, met andere laat hij ons zelf aan de slag gaan. Soms formuleert hij een antwoord waar een vraag zou moeten bijhoren.

De kunst van Nicolas Vander Biest toont zich in taal, nu eens zwart op wit, dan wel ondersteund door kleur, al dan niet in een strakke vorm en in een mix van materialen en technieken.

Sinds zijn verblijf in Mexico City (begin 2018 tot heden) is hij geëvolueerd van een 'verhalend kunstenaar' naar een 'conceptual textbased artist'.

 De verhalen zijn gecondenseerd tot boodschappen, vaststellingen, vragen, antwoorden,... staan nu eens alleen, dan weer in combinatie met beelden die verwijzen naar kunstgeschiedenis, omgeving of abstractie.

Neem nu 'Flemish Master' (2019), een geschilderde gele tekst op een kopie van een zelfportret door P.P. Rubens:

Relativeren is een middel om één en ander in perspectief te plaatsen. 
Ironie is een overlevingsstrategie.

Tentoonstellen, werk aan de buitenwereld tonen, een publiek bereiken,... er zijn tegenwoordig tal van virtuele mogelijkheden. Maar direct contact is onontbeerlijk en ook daar heeft de kunstenaar nog een gouden tip met een knipoog.
